travel and departure >

American, Continental, Delta and United Airlines have daily flights to Buenos Aires from the US. Ticket prices vary greatly. You may want to check with Carbone Travel (http://www.carbone-travel.com) or Tessi Travel (1-800-223-2178), agencies based on the East Coast whose specialty is travel to South America. They often have better prices.

International flights arrive at Ezeiza International Airport. It is located about 35 kilometers outside of the city center. We recommend that you:

1. Take a taxi or “remise” (private car). This costs about 250 pesos, depending on where you are staying. Choose one of the companies with stands right after going through customs in the arrival area of the airport (such as Manuel Tienda Leon Airport Express or World Car). You must prepay the trip and can do so with a credit card. For your safety, please do not accept offers, even if the price is lower, from individuals who approach you at the airport.

2. Take the airport shuttle operated by Manuel Tienda Leon. The ticket costs about 120 pesos and can be purchased online or at their Airport Service desk. The buses leave the airport for the company´s terminal downtown (Av. E. Madero 1299) every 35 minutes. From there, you can take a taxi to your hotel at a cost of about $70.

Getting around Buenos Aires

By taxi: A “radio taxi” is a taxi that is operated by a legitimate company, with registered drivers and can be ordered by phone. It is wise to be cautious about hailing cabs on the street. If you must, try to get a cab with radio-taxi markings, and once inside, make sure lock the doors. We strongly recommend that you use a radio-taxi whenever possible, and certainly at night. You may ask your hotel or a restaurant to call one for you. It is not necessary to tip taxi or remise drivers unless they perform a special service.

Radio-Taxis: Premium 5238-0000 Onda Verde 4867-0000

By subte: Buenos Aires' subway system, known as the subte, is good; it is the oldest in South America, dating from 1913. Many of its stations are decorated with original artwork showing historic scenes of the city or murals by contemporary artists. There are six lines, referred to by letters A, B, C, D, and E and and H that connect in different stations. The fare is AR$ 4.50 , and pass cards can be purchased for single or multiple trips. The subte is safe, clean, and fast, but it is very crowded during rush hours and can be hot. Also, be aware of pickpockets on this an all public transportation in BA. The Subte runs daily from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m.
